PTFE vs. PPS Filter Bags: Which is Right for Your Boiler or Kiln?
A technical chemical breakdown between Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) and 100% Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) needle felts. Evaluates thermal endurance, SOx acid resistance, oxygen embrittlement limits, and lifecycle economics.
In flue gas filtration above 160°C, Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) represent the two most common choices. Selecting the wrong media can lead to catastrophic bag failure within 3 to 6 months due to oxygen oxidation or thermal acid hydrolysis.
1. Thermal Endurance Limits
PPS operates reliably at continuous flue gas temperatures up to 190°C (with peaks up to 210°C). PTFE exhibits unprecedented thermal stability up to 260°C continuous (peaks up to 280°C). If your plant experiences frequent temperature surges above 200°C due to boiler bypass valves or economizer fouling, PPS fibers will stiffen, crack, and lose tensile strength within hours.
2. Oxygen Concentration (O₂) and Oxidation Vulnerability
The primary Achilles heel of PPS is oxidation. In flue gas environments where oxygen concentration exceeds 10–12% and temperature exceeds 165°C, oxygen radicals attack the thioether bonds (-S-) in the PPS polymer backbone, turning the felt brittle. In contrast, the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond in PTFE is among the strongest chemical bonds in organic chemistry; PTFE is 100% chemically inert across all oxygen concentrations and pH levels (0–14).
3. Moisture and SOx Acid Dew Point Hydrolysis
When high sulfur coal is combusted, sulfur trioxide (SO₃) combines with flue gas moisture to form sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), with acid dew points often reaching 130–150°C. PPS possesses excellent resistance to sulfur acids provided temperatures remain above the acid dew point. However, if cold-air ingress occurs at the hopper or casing walls, localized acid condensation will accelerate bag rotting. PTFE is completely impervious to concentrated sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids.
4. Lifecycle Cost Analysis: The PTFE Premium
While 100% PTFE needle felt is approximately 2.2× to 2.5× more expensive per piece than 550g PPS, PTFE delivers operating lifespans of 48–60 months compared to 18–30 months for PPS. When factoring in the labor cost of bag replacement, lost production downtime, and differential pressure fan power consumption, PTFE often delivers a lower 4-year lifecycle cost.
